Meaning of the name Abel Tasman was a Dutch explorer and cartographer, born in Groningen in 1603 and died in Batavia (now Jakarta) in 1659. He explored the East Indies (Indonesia), Australia and Oceania. He discovered New Zealand and Fiji, and especially an island south of Australia and we have named after his name: the island is now called the Tasmania (Tasman had called Van Diemensland).
